"More Freedom = Less Crime" Says Libertarian Alliance

The Libertarian Alliance, the radical free market and civil liberties pressure group, today calls on the British Government to start a real war on crime.

The murder conviction of a 15 year old boy, who kicked a young woman to death because he disliked her fashion sense, will start the usual cries - for greater police powers, for more controls on alcohol and drugs, for greater general surveillance.

But all this is the wrong approach. Libertarian Alliance Director, Sean Gabb, says:

"The politicians are right when they say we live in a 'Broken Britain'. What they cannot admit is that they are the ones who broke it.

"Their welfare polices have raised up a growing underclass for whom self-respect is an alien concept. Their tax and regulatory policies have removed from communities the small businessmen who used to provide leadership to all and an example to the young. Their criminalisation of drugs has subsidised a class of violent criminals to take the place of the old leaders. Their education policies have condemned millions to a course of psychopathic indoctrination that has retarded the moral faculty. Their new criminal laws have stripped the respectable of all ability to defend themselves.

"This country cannot be fixed by more government. It is government that got us into this mess. If the politicians are serious about tacking crime and disorder, they need to repeal existing laws, not make new ones."

The Libertarian Alliance believes:

  • That all state welfare should be abolished within ten years, and that such welfare as continues should be directed at the "deserving poor";
  • That all taxes on incomes of less than £50,000 should be abolished;
  • That all taxes on businesses with a turnover of less than £1m a year should be abolished;
  • That all drugs should be relegalised;
  • That all state schooling should be abolished;
  • That guns should be relegalised, and that the use of lethal force in defence of life, liberty and property should be explicitly allowed;
  • That aggressions against life, liberty and property ("real crimes") should be punished with great severity.
