Statement on Disturbance in Birkenhead County Court

On the 7th March 2011, there was a mass-disturbance in Birkenhead County Court, in which proceedings for non-payment of Council Tax had to be suspended, and there was an attempt to arrest the Judge.

Because the protesters seem to have been natives, this kind of disturbance is very unusual in modern England; and reports have appeared in both home and foreign media. Few of these reports have given the intellectual background to the disturbance, choosing instead to cover it as if it were some modern acting out of an Ealing comedy.

However, the protesters were motivated by a set of beliefs that can be loosely described as libertarian - though the protesters themselves had no connection with the Libertarian Alliance. Most call themselves Freemen of the Land, and they deny the moral and legal right of the British State to treat them as it does.

The Freemen of the Land are a growing movement, and are very likely to stage other protests. Anyone who wants a short but comprehensive overview - written by a sympathetic outsider - should read this publication from the Libertarian Alliance:

John Kersey, The Freeman on the Land Movement: Grass Roots Libertarianism in Action,
Legal notes No. 50

His latest novel, The Break, has been nominated for the 2015 Prometheus Award.

His recent book, Freedom of Speech in England: Its Present State and Likely Prospects, is a defence of freedom of speech without exceptions.

Or his book, Cultural Revolution, Culture War: How Conservatives Lost England, and How to Get It Back, explains how its current ruling class has turned England into a totalitarian police state, and how this ruling class can be overthrown and utterly destroyed.

Or another of his books, Smoking, Class and the Legitimation of Power, explains how the current "war" on smoking has nothing to do with making individuals healthy, but everything to do with enhancing the power of a totalitarian ruling class, and enriching its relevant client groups.

You can see other books by Sean Gabb here.
